What UK Charity Row support means to Wessex Cancer Trust

Guest blog by Clare Lay, Head of Fundraising at Wessex Cancer Trust:

Wow! How lucky we are to have the UK Row choose us as their charity for this amazing initiative… Wessex Cancer Trust has 5 Cancer Support Centres and 4 shops. The charity delivers non-clinical care services to individuals (children and adults), their families and carers from as early as a cancer diagnosis itself, regardless of type of cancer, background or stage of their condition. Each centre offers Counselling, befriending and complementary therapies such as aromatherapy, reflexology and reiki, helping people emotionally and to manage pain.

The Cancer Support Centres are run by a few members of paid staff and a large number of volunteers some of whom are fully trained as befrienders and have experienced the cancer journey themselves. It is often the most vulnerable point of a person’s life to be told they have cancer and the charity it proud to be able to help and support people through this period of time. Information, advocacy, some holiday home availability and small grants are amongst services offered and individuals are even transported by Wessex Cancer Trust minibuses to hospital by volunteer drivers. Geographically the charity covers Hampshire, Dorset, Wiltshire and the Isle of Wight and some patients come from the Channel Islands where they are accommodated at Jury’s Inn (Southampton) whilst they have hospital visits to attend. The charity also has a children’s fund to train nurses from the Channel Islands in children’s cancer care in order for children to get cancer care treatments without having to travel, staying close to home.

All services are free and it is hoped that the UK Rowers will be able to help us open other centres with their challenge funds raised and allow us to continue to meet the need for our services where there would otherwise not be any. Fundraising events, shops, corporate support, bequests and one-off donations all make a huge difference to the way Wessex Cancer Trust can care for cancer sufferers and of course, provide a very personal and private service in so many different ways.

So thank you to the lads and Good Luck. We will be following you all the way…please pick up your mobile and text or click on the link to donate and show them your support!
